A fine eighteenth-century etching by Domenico Cunego depicting the Almighty surrounded by putti, executed with precise engraving techniques.
This fine etching and engraving by Domenico Cunego depicts a traditional religious subject, The Almighty, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of eighteenth-century Italian printmaking. Cunego, a skilled engraver from Verona, was active in Rome, where he produced numerous reproductions of works by Old Masters. This particular print captures a central figure of God the Father, surrounded by putti, set within an octagonal frame. The composition draws from the Baroque tradition of celestial scenes, yet the execution reflects the cleaner, more structured approach favoured during the Neoclassical period.
The figure of the Almighty is shown with one hand raised in a gesture of benediction, while the other rests near a globe, symbolising dominion over the earth. The surrounding putti are arranged to create a sense of movement and depth, their forms modelled through careful cross-hatching and varied line weights. The inclusion of the Latin inscription, 'Te eternum Patrem omnis terra Veneratur', identifies the theological context of the work, referencing the Te Deum hymn.
Cunego's ability to translate the tonal qualities of a painting into the linear medium of engraving is evident here. The play of light and shadow across the drapery and the clouds provides a sense of volume, while the octagonal border focuses the viewer's attention on the central narrative. As a printmaker, Cunego was highly regarded for his fidelity to the original compositions he reproduced, often working after paintings by artists such as Raphael or Domenichino. This piece offers a clear example of the high standard of reproductive printmaking in Rome during the late eighteenth century, providing a window into the period's aesthetic preferences for balanced, classical compositions and refined technical execution.
