An etching by Sébastien Bourdon depicts the biblical scene of the angel counseling Joseph, rendered with fine lines and detailed background.
This etching by Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671) depicts the biblical scene of the angel counseling Joseph. Bourdon, a French painter and engraver, was influenced by a variety of styles, including the French Baroque, classicism, and the Dutch Golden Age. He spent time in Rome, where he studied the works of the Old Masters, and later became one of the original members of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. The composition shows Joseph, accompanied by Mary and the infant Jesus on a donkey, being visited by an angel. The angel gestures towards Joseph, seemingly delivering a divine message. The scene is set against a detailed background that includes architectural ruins, a distant city, and natural elements such as trees and foliage. The artist's skill is evident in the fine lines and the use of hatching to create depth and shadow. The overall effect is one of solemnity and divine intervention.
