Joseph Wright of Derby
A dramatic nocturnal scene by Joseph Wright of Derby, capturing the intense light of the annual firework display at the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome.
Joseph Wright of Derby, a painter associated with the scientific and industrial advancements of the eighteenth century, travelled to Italy between 1773 and 1775. During this period, he produced several works capturing the dramatic effects of light in nocturnal settings. This painting depicts the Girandola, a spectacular firework display held annually at the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. The composition is dominated by the intense, golden glow of the pyrotechnics, which illuminate the dark sky and cast a warm light over the architectural silhouette of the castle and the distant dome of St. Peter's Basilica. Wright employs his characteristic chiaroscuro technique to contrast the brilliant, explosive light against the deep, murky shadows of the foreground. A pair of pine trees frames the right side of the scene, providing a vertical anchor that draws the eye towards the central pyrotechnic display. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on the classical ruins of Rome, Wright was preoccupied with the ephemeral nature of light and atmospheric conditions. The painting captures the raw energy of the event, with streaks of light cutting through the smoke and darkness. The artist's interest in the physics of light is evident in the way the firework's radiance reflects off the clouds and the surrounding structures. This work belongs to a series of Italian subjects that demonstrate his ability to translate the awe of natural and man-made phenomena into a static medium. The scene remains a study in the power of artificial illumination, a recurring theme throughout his career.
