A detailed engraving of the Archangel Gabriel by the Dutch master Crispijn van de Passe (I), featuring elegant line work and Latin inscriptions.
This engraving by Crispijn van de Passe (I) depicts the Archangel Gabriel, a central figure in the narrative of the Annunciation. Van de Passe was a highly skilled Dutch printmaker whose work circulated widely across Europe during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. His technical proficiency is evident in the precise handling of the burin, which creates a range of textures from the soft curls of the angel's hair to the folds of his drapery.
The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common device in period printmaking that focuses the viewer's attention on the subject. The Latin inscription surrounding the oval, taken from the prayer Ave Maria, provides a liturgical context for the image. Gabriel is shown in profile, gesturing upwards with his right hand while holding a staff in his left. The inclusion of cherubic heads in the corners of the rectangular plate adds a decorative element that balances the central portrait.
Van de Passe belonged to a family of printmakers who were instrumental in the dissemination of religious and mythological imagery. His style reflects the influence of the Mannerist tradition, characterised by elongated proportions and a focus on elegant, rhythmic lines. The shading is achieved through a system of cross-hatching and parallel lines, a method that demonstrates the artist's command of light and volume. This print offers a clear example of the high standard of craftsmanship found in Dutch engraving during this period. It is a piece that rewards close inspection, revealing the methodical approach taken by the artist to render form and expression through the medium of copperplate engraving.
