Memling employs a meticulous approach to detail, characteristic of his training in Bruges. The textures of the heavy, gold-embroidered brocade worn by Gabriel contrast with the soft, flowing folds of Mary's white gown and dark blue mantle. The interior space is defined by a tiled floor and a wooden cabinet, upon which sit a glass carafe and a candle. A vase containing lilies, a traditional symbol of purity, occupies the foreground. Above the Virgin, a dove representing the Holy Spirit descends within a circular halo, connecting the divine realm to the earthly setting.

The lighting is soft and even, typical of the Northern Renaissance style, which prioritises clarity and the observation of light reflecting off various surfaces. The red bed hangings provide a strong colour contrast to the cooler tones of the angels' wings and the Virgin's attire. Memling avoids excessive drama, opting instead for a quiet, contemplative mood.
