Luca Giordano, a Neapolitan painter of prodigious talent, wasn't nicknamed 'Lightning' for nothing. His speed was legendary; it was said he could paint more in a day than others could in a month. Born in Naples in 1634, Giordano absorbed the vibrant, dramatic style of the Baroque, becoming a key figure in its popularisation across Europe. His father, also a painter, apprenticed him early, first to Ribera in Naples, then sending him to Rome and Northern Italy to study the masters. Giordano's ability to mimic different styles – from Venetian colourism to the Roman High Baroque – made him incredibly sought after. Commissions poured in from churches and palaces across Italy and Spain. His vast ceiling frescoes, such as those in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence, are testaments to his boundless energy and illusionistic skill. He seamlessly blended the grandeur of Roman Baroque with the exuberance of Venetian painting. Though immensely successful and prolific, Giordano's work never feels formulaic. His paintings are infused with a sense of theatricality and movement, inviting viewers into a world of swirling figures and radiant light. Whether depicting mythological scenes or religious narratives, Giordano's art is a celebration of life, energy, and the sheer joy of painting.
