A wood engraving by Winslow Homer from 1863, depicting passengers on a ship observing the distant CSS Alabama during the American Civil War.
Published in Harper's Weekly on 25 April 1863, this wood engraving captures a moment of tension during the American Civil War. Winslow Homer, working as a special correspondent and illustrator, depicts a group of passengers on a ship deck observing the distant silhouette of the CSS Alabama. The vessel, a commerce raider built in Britain for the Confederate Navy, caused significant disruption to Union shipping.
Homer focuses on the human reaction to the threat. A central male figure uses a telescope to scan the horizon, while others, including women in period dress, look on with expressions of concern. The composition uses the deck planks to draw the eye towards the horizon line, where the small, ominous shape of the ship is visible. The contrast between the domestic, civilian nature of the figures and the looming military threat creates a narrative of uncertainty.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision required for mid-nineteenth-century mass-market printing. The cross-hatching and varied line weights define the textures of the clothing, the wooden deck, and the atmospheric quality of the sky. Homer avoids excessive melodrama, opting instead for a controlled, observational approach that characterises his early career as an illustrator. The inclusion of a small book lying on the deck adds a touch of mundane detail, grounding the scene in a specific, lived moment. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the American Civil War era, documenting how the conflict was communicated to the public through the medium of the illustrated press.
