A delicate lithograph by Pierre Bonnard, capturing the Arc de Triomphe through a series of rhythmic, textured marks and a muted, atmospheric palette.
Pierre Bonnard, a founding member of the Nabis group, produced this lithograph during a period when he was deeply engaged with the urban atmosphere of Paris. The work captures the Arc de Triomphe from a distance, framed by the skeletal forms of trees that line the thoroughfare. Bonnard employs a distinct graphic sensibility, using layered, textured marks to suggest the movement of riders and the hazy quality of the city air. The composition relies on a flattened perspective, a characteristic trait of his work influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, which he collected and studied throughout his career.
Unlike the rigid architectural renderings common in the nineteenth century, this print prioritises the subjective experience of the scene. The figures on horseback appear as silhouettes, integrated into the overall texture of the street rather than standing as distinct subjects. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and muted washes to convey the seasonal transition of the Parisian streets. The sky is rendered with a pale, ethereal wash, contrasting with the denser, scribbled lines that define the foliage and the road surface. This print demonstrates Bonnard's ability to reduce a complex urban vista into a series of rhythmic, calligraphic marks. It avoids the descriptive precision of traditional topography, opting instead for a suggestive, atmospheric interpretation of the city. The work remains a fine example of the experimental printmaking techniques that defined the Nabis circle, where the focus shifted from objective representation to the decorative and expressive potential of the printed surface.
