A detailed pen and ink drawing by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin, showcasing his mastery of line and composition.
This drawing by Albrecht Dürer depicts the dual theological event of the Assumption and the Coronation of the Virgin. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the lower section, the Apostles gather around an empty sarcophagus, their gestures conveying astonishment and reverence. The perspective draws the eye toward the centre, where the empty tomb serves as a physical anchor for the narrative.
Above, the scene shifts to the celestial realm. The Virgin Mary is shown ascending, flanked by angels, as she is crowned by the figure of Christ. Dürer employs his characteristic pen-and-ink technique, using fine, controlled lines to define the drapery of the garments and the expressive features of the figures. The cross-hatching creates a sense of volume and depth, allowing the forms to emerge from the paper surface without the need for colour.
The work demonstrates the artist's mastery of human anatomy and his ability to organise complex groups of figures within a unified space. The figures are rendered with a high degree of naturalism, typical of Dürer's mature period. The drawing reflects the artist's engagement with the religious themes that occupied much of his career, balancing the physical reality of the Apostles with the ethereal nature of the divine figures above. The shield-like shape of the composition suggests it may have been a preparatory study for a larger commission, possibly a stained-glass design or a panel painting. The precision of the line work and the clarity of the narrative structure are consistent with Dürer's output during the early sixteenth century, a period when he was refining his approach to monumental religious subjects.
