A domestic genre scene by Bartolomeo Pinelli, featuring a family setting with a memento mori motif and the inscription 'Tutto Finisce'.
Bartolomeo Pinelli, a Roman artist known for his documentation of local life and customs, produced this etching as a personal reflection on domesticity. The composition depicts a quiet scene within a household, where figures are engaged in daily tasks. A woman sits on a chair, attending to a child, while another figure works with thread nearby. The presence of a skull resting upon a stack of books provides a memento mori, a common motif in art of this period, which serves to remind the viewer of the transient nature of life. The inscription 'Tutto Finisce' (Everything Ends) reinforces this philosophical inclusion.
Pinelli employs a clean, linear style characteristic of his graphic work. The figures are rendered with clear outlines, and the shading is achieved through precise hatching. The inclusion of two dogs, one in the foreground and one to the right, adds a sense of naturalism to the interior setting. The perspective is relatively shallow, focusing the viewer on the interaction between the family members. The work reflects the artist's interest in capturing the reality of his surroundings, moving away from the grand historical subjects that dominated much of the Italian art scene at the time.
This print offers a glimpse into the private world of the artist. It balances the mundane activities of family life with the weight of existential contemplation. The stark contrast between the black ink and the white paper allows the details of the clothing, the furniture, and the expressions of the subjects to remain clear. As a piece of social history, it provides insight into the domestic environment of early nineteenth-century Rome, stripped of idealisation. The work remains a representative example of Pinelli's ability to combine narrative storytelling with technical precision in the medium of etching.
