Maximilien Luce painted this view of the Seine near Rolleboise in 1935. By this stage in his career, Luce had moved away from the strict scientific application of colour theory that defined his earlier Neo-Impressionist work. Instead, he adopted a more fluid, expressive brushwork that prioritised the atmospheric quality of the French countryside.
The composition features a path winding along the riverbank, framed by trees that lean towards the water. The Seine occupies the centre of the frame, reflecting the light from an overcast sky. Two small figures are positioned near the water, providing a sense of scale to the natural surroundings. Luce uses a palette of earthy greens, ochres, and muted blues to capture the quietude of the river valley. This technique involved applying small, distinct dots of colour to the canvas, which then blend in the viewer's eye to create a unified image. Unlike Seurat, who sought a scientific precision, Luce used Pointillism to capture the energy and dynamism of modern life, particularly the industrial world. His paintings demonstrate a fascination with light and colour and an interest in capturing the atmosphere of his subjects.
