This etching by Sébastien Bourdon depicts 'The Baptism of the Eunuch' from the Acts of the Apostles. The scene shows Philip the Apostle baptising an Ethiopian official, rendered with fine lines and careful detail.
Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671) was a French painter and printmaker, known for his classical and baroque styles. He was a versatile artist, producing history paintings, portraits, and genre scenes. Bourdon spent time in Italy, where he was influenced by the works of the Old Masters, and later became one of the original twelve members of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. He also served as a professor and rector of the Académie. His work is characterised by its attention to detail, dramatic compositions, and use of light and shadow. 'The Baptism of the Eunuch' depicts a scene from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 8:26-40). Philip the Apostle, guided by an angel, encounters an Ethiopian eunuch, a high official in the court of Candace, Queen of Ethiopia. The eunuch is reading the prophet Isaiah, and Philip explains the scripture to him, preaching about Jesus. Convinced, the eunuch asks to be baptised. The etching shows the moment of baptism, with Philip pouring water over the kneeling eunuch. The composition includes onlookers, horses, and a classical architectural fragment, all rendered in fine lines and careful detail.
