Paul Cézanne's *The Basket of Apples*, c. 1893, exemplifies his Post-Impressionist style. The still life features a skewed perspective and deliberate brushstrokes, capturing the essence of everyday objects.
Paul Cézanne's still life, *The Basket of Apples*, painted around 1893, is a prime example of his revolutionary approach to painting. Cézanne, a French artist (1839-1906), rejected traditional perspective and aimed to capture the essence of objects through colour and form. His work is considered a bridge between Impressionism and Cubism. This painting presents a tabletop arrangement featuring a basket overflowing with apples, a bottle, a plate of biscuits, and a rumpled white cloth. The composition is deliberately skewed; the table appears tilted, and the perspective is inconsistent. Cézanne employed short, deliberate brushstrokes to build up layers of colour, creating a sense of volume and solidity. The apples themselves are rendered with a range of reds, yellows, and greens, each facet catching the light in a unique way. The overall effect is one of controlled disarray, inviting the viewer to examine the objects from multiple viewpoints simultaneously. Cézanne's subversion of traditional artistic conventions paved the way for modern art's exploration of abstraction and subjective representation.
