A detailed 16th-century engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicting the biblical battle between the Israelites and the Amalekites.
This engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical conflict between the Israelites and the Amalekites as described in the Book of Exodus. The composition is dense, capturing the chaotic energy of a sixteenth-century battlefield. In the foreground, soldiers engage in close-quarters combat, wielding swords, shields, and bows while mounted on horseback. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and dynamic poses characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style.
In the upper left, the scene shifts to a hillside where Moses stands with his arms raised, supported by Aaron and Hur. This detail provides the theological context for the battle, as the success of the Israelites is tied to the physical endurance of Moses. The artist employs a high vantage point to organise the sprawling melee, allowing the viewer to track the movement of the cavalry and infantry across the terrain. The work is finished with delicate hand-colouring, which defines the armour, garments, and landscape elements against the paper ground.
Johann Sadeler I was a prolific engraver from Brussels who worked extensively in Germany and Italy. His output often focused on religious and allegorical subjects, produced for a market that valued both technical precision and narrative clarity. This print reflects the period interest in classical and biblical history, presented through the lens of contemporary military aesthetics. The inclusion of Latin and French inscriptions at the base indicates its intended use as an educational or devotional illustration, likely part of a larger series documenting biblical events. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the Sadeler family, who were instrumental in the dissemination of European graphic art during the late Renaissance.
