Description

A dramatic woodblock triptych by Utagawa Sadahide depicting a chaotic naval battle from the Zen Taiheiki.

This woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide depicts a naval engagement from the Zen Taiheiki, a historical narrative concerning the conflicts of the fourteenth century. Sadahide, a student of Utagawa Kunisada, produced this work during the mid-nineteenth century, a period when the genre of musha-e, or warrior prints, gained significant popularity among the urban population of Edo.

The composition is a triptych, a format frequently employed by printmakers to convey large-scale action. The scene captures the chaos of maritime warfare: ships are locked in combat, smoke billows from burning vessels, and warriors engage in close-quarters fighting across the decks. The artist uses a dark, atmospheric palette to suggest a night-time setting, punctuated by the orange glow of fire and the stark white of crashing waves. The water is rendered with repetitive, stylised patterns that provide a sense of movement, while the ships are depicted with technical attention to their structural details.

Sadahide was known for his ability to manage complex scenes involving multiple figures. Here, the narrative is driven by the dynamic poses of the samurai and the directional flow of the smoke and banners. The inclusion of cartouches containing text provides historical context for the viewer, identifying the specific figures and events depicted. This print offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period, where historical drama and military prowess were common subjects for artistic production. The work demonstrates the technical skill required to align three separate woodblocks to form a cohesive image, a standard practice for large-format prints of the era.
