Edgar Degas's "The Bellelli Family" is a portrait of his aunt, uncle, and cousins, painted between 1858 and 1867. The painting is a study of family dynamics, rendered in a subdued palette of blacks, greys, and blues.
Painted between 1858 and 1867, Edgar Degas's "The Bellelli Family" is a large-scale group portrait depicting his aunt, Laure Bellelli, her husband, Baron Gennaro Bellelli, and their two daughters, Giovanna and Giulia. The painting is a complex study of family relationships and psychological tension. Laure is depicted in mourning for her recently deceased father, whose portrait hangs on the wall behind her. Her husband, Gennaro, sits in a chair, seemingly detached from the rest of the family. The two daughters stand between their parents, their expressions suggesting a mix of curiosity and unease. The composition is carefully constructed, with the figures arranged in a pyramidal shape. The colour palette is subdued, dominated by blacks, greys, and blues, which contributes to the painting's overall mood of melancholy. Degas's attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the figures' clothing and the objects in the room. The painting is considered one of Degas's early masterpieces, demonstrating his skill as a portraitist and his ability to capture the complexities of human relationships. It resides in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
