A life-size portrait by Thomas Gainsborough, featuring a young man in a distinctive blue satin costume set against a dark, atmospheric background.
Thomas Gainsborough painted this life-size portrait around 1770. It depicts a young man, traditionally identified as Jonathan Buttall, the son of a wealthy hardware merchant. The subject stands in a confident pose, dressed in a seventeenth-century style blue satin costume. This choice of attire was a deliberate stylistic reference to the works of Anthony van Dyck, whom Gainsborough admired greatly.
The figure occupies a rugged, atmospheric setting. Gainsborough used a muted, earthy palette for the background, which allows the cool blue tones of the subject's clothing to dominate the composition. The brushwork is fluid and expressive, a signature trait of the artist's later period. He applied paint with a lightness that creates a sense of movement and texture, particularly in the shimmering fabric of the boy's doublet and breeches.
Historically, the painting generated significant interest due to its departure from the standard portraiture conventions of the eighteenth century. While many of his contemporaries favoured formal, rigid poses, Gainsborough opted for a more relaxed and naturalistic stance. The work demonstrates his technical ability to manage light and shadow, ensuring the figure remains the clear focus despite the dark, moody environment. The painting is currently held in the collection of The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.
