A striking maritime scene by Cornish folk artist Alfred Wallis, featuring a bold blue ship navigating textured, swirling waters.
Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties following the death of his wife. He possessed no formal training, yet his work captures the essence of the sea with an immediate, unmediated quality. Wallis often painted on scavenged materials, such as cardboard boxes or scraps of wood, using limited household paints. This choice of substrate frequently dictated the dimensions and irregular shapes of his compositions.
In this work, the vessel dominates the frame, rendered with a flattened perspective that prioritises the clarity of the ship over realistic spatial depth. The ochre sails contrast against the deep blue hull and the textured, choppy water. Wallis employs a direct application of paint, using his fingers or simple brushes to create the rhythmic, swirling patterns of the waves. The inclusion of lighthouses and harbour structures provides a sense of place, reflecting his lifelong familiarity with the St Ives coastline.
His approach to scale is intuitive rather than academic. Objects are sized according to their importance to the narrative of the scene, rather than their distance from the viewer. This lack of conventional perspective creates a graphic, almost map-like quality. The work is devoid of artifice, presenting a raw and honest interpretation of maritime life. By eschewing the conventions of the art establishment, Wallis produced images that feel both personal and universal. His output remains a significant example of British folk art, appreciated for its sincerity and the way it distils the complex motion of the ocean into simple, bold forms. This print captures the tactile nature of the original cardboard surface and the thick, impasto application of the paint, allowing the viewer to appreciate the directness of his technique.
