The scene depicts the tragic conclusion of the story of Elaine of Astolat, who dies of unrequited love for Lancelot. Her body is placed upon a barge, steered by a mute servant, to be carried to Camelot.

The composition is dominated by the looming, atmospheric silhouette of the castle in the background, which appears almost as an extension of the rugged cliffside.
