A dramatic illustration by Gustave Doré from his 1868 series for Tennyson's Idylls of the King, depicting the funeral barge of Elaine.
This work is one of the nine illustrations created by Gustave Doré for the 1868 edition of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's 'Idylls of the King'. The scene depicts the tragic conclusion of the story of Elaine of Astolat, who dies of unrequited love for Lancelot. Her body is placed upon a barge, steered by a mute servant, to be carried to Camelot.
Doré employs a dramatic use of light and shadow to convey the solemnity of the narrative. The composition is dominated by the looming, atmospheric silhouette of the castle in the background, which appears almost as an extension of the rugged cliffside. The water is rendered with subtle tonal variations, creating a sense of stillness that contrasts with the heavy, textured clouds above. The figure of the boatman is small in scale, emphasising the vastness of the environment and the isolation of the funeral journey.
Technically, the print demonstrates Doré's mastery of line and tone. By using varied hatching techniques, he achieves a depth that mimics the quality of a wash drawing. The focus remains on the quiet, mournful procession, with the figure of Elaine partially obscured by the drapery of the boat. This work reflects the Victorian fascination with Arthurian legend and the romanticised portrayal of death. The monochromatic palette reinforces the melancholic mood, drawing the viewer into the narrative through its stark, atmospheric clarity. It is a fine example of nineteenth-century book illustration, where the artist's vision is inextricably linked to the poetic source material.
