A refined interior scene by Alfred Stevens, depicting a woman in a dark gown observing a bouquet before a gilded mirror.
Alfred Stevens, a Belgian painter active in Paris, focused his career on the depiction of elegant women within domestic settings. This work, The Bouquet, captures a woman in a dark, voluminous dress standing before a console table. Her attention is directed toward a small floral arrangement placed upon the marble surface. The composition relies on the interplay between the figure and the mirror, which reflects her profile and creates a sense of psychological distance.
The interior is rendered with careful attention to texture and light. The yellow damask wallpaper provides a warm backdrop for the gilded mirror frame and the ornate legs of the console table. Two red chairs flank the table, adding a structural balance to the scene. Stevens was known for his technical precision and his ability to convey the material qualities of fabrics, such as the heavy velvet of the woman's gown and the delicate pattern of her shawl.
This painting reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in the private lives of the bourgeoisie. Stevens avoids overt narrative, preferring to present a quiet moment of contemplation. The mirror acts as a device to expand the visual space, allowing the viewer to observe the subject from two angles simultaneously. The muted tones of the room contrast with the bright, focused light on the bouquet, drawing the eye to the central object of the title. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner, consistent with his practice of documenting his finished canvases. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's mastery of interior genre painting, where the arrangement of furniture and personal items informs the mood of the composition.
