A quiet, atmospheric study of the Asiatic Company buildings in Copenhagen, rendered in a muted palette of greys and blues.
Vilhelm Hammershøi is recognised for his quiet, atmospheric depictions of Copenhagen. This work, painted in 1902, captures the austere facade of the Asiatic Company buildings. The composition is strictly symmetrical, creating a sense of stillness that is characteristic of the artist's approach to urban subjects. By removing human figures and reducing the architectural details to their essential geometric forms, Hammershøi shifts the focus from the function of the building to the quality of light and space.
The palette is restrained, dominated by muted greys, soft blues, and earthy tones. This limited colour range allows the viewer to observe the subtle variations in texture across the stone and plaster surfaces. The sky, occupying the upper centre of the frame, is rendered with a flat, uniform application of paint that reinforces the sense of silence. Unlike his contemporaries who often sought to capture the bustle of city life, Hammershøi preferred to document the city in moments of suspension.
His technique involves thin layers of paint, which contribute to the ethereal, almost hazy quality of the image. The shadows are soft, lacking the sharp contrast typically found in academic architectural studies. This approach creates a meditative viewing experience, inviting contemplation rather than immediate engagement with the subject matter. The work reflects the artist's interest in the psychological weight of physical environments. By stripping away the extraneous, he presents a vision of the city that feels both familiar and detached from time. This print offers a precise reproduction of his original oil on canvas, maintaining the tonal balance and the specific, cool atmosphere that defines his body of work.
