Description
A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance art, this work depicts the miraculous burial of the Count of Orgaz, split between a realistic earthly funeral and a visionary celestial realm.
The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is a large-scale oil painting commissioned for the Church of Santo Tomé in Toledo. It depicts a local legend from the fourteenth century, in which Saint Stephen and Saint Augustine descended from the heavens to inter the body of Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, the Count of Orgaz, in recognition of his charitable works. El Greco divides the composition into two distinct zones. The lower section represents the terrestrial realm, where the funeral takes place. The figures here are rendered with realistic detail, dressed in the contemporary sixteenth-century attire of the Spanish nobility and clergy. Many of these figures are portraits of prominent citizens of Toledo, including the artist himself, who appears in the crowd. The colour palette in this lower register is dominated by dark tones, contrasting with the metallic sheen of the saints' vestments and the armour of the deceased. The upper section represents the celestial realm. Here, the artist employs his characteristic elongated figures and fluid, expressive brushwork. The transition from earth to heaven is achieved through a cloud-like formation that acts as a bridge between the two worlds. In this ethereal space, Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints await the soul of the Count, which is depicted as a small, translucent figure being carried upwards by an angel. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise Byzantine iconographic traditions with the dramatic lighting and spatial manipulation of the Italian Mannerist style. The painting remains in its original location in Toledo, where it continues to occupy the space for which it was designed. This fine art print captures the dramatic contrast between the grounded, sombre reality of the funeral and the luminous, visionary nature of the heavenly scene above.
