Gustave Courbet, a central figure in the French Realist movement, produced a series of seascapes during his stays on the Normandy coast. The Calm Sea captures the expansive horizon of the English Channel with a focus on the atmospheric conditions of the sky and the stillness of the water. Courbet often applied paint with a palette knife, a technique that provides the clouds with a tactile, heavy quality. This method allows for the build-up of texture, which contrasts with the flatter, more uniform application of paint used for the sea and the shoreline.
The composition is divided into three distinct horizontal bands: the sandy foreground, the turquoise sea, and the voluminous, cloud-filled sky. Two small boats rest on the shore, their presence providing a sense of scale against the vastness of the natural environment. Unlike the dramatic, stormy seascapes he produced during the same period, this work emphasises a quiet, observational approach to the coast.
