A detailed Renaissance engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicting the classical allegory of the Calumny of Apelles.
This engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicts the classical allegory of the Calumny of Apelles, a subject derived from the writings of Lucian. The narrative concerns a false accusation brought against an innocent man before a judge. Mocetto, a Venetian artist active during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, interprets this moralising theme through the lens of Northern Italian printmaking traditions.
The composition follows a linear arrangement across a shallow stage-like space. On the left, a judge sits enthroned, flanked by figures representing Suspicion and Ignorance. In the centre, the personification of Calumny drags a youth, Innocence, toward the judge, while being assisted by figures labelled as Insidia and Adiptione. To the right, the figures of Penitence and Truth stand as observers of the unfolding injustice. The architectural backdrop, featuring a domed structure and classical motifs, reflects the interest in antiquity common among artists of the period.
Mocetto employs a precise, controlled line to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The hatching techniques create subtle modelling of the drapery and facial features, providing a sense of volume despite the relatively flat spatial organisation. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions beneath the figures serves to clarify the allegorical roles, a common practice in Renaissance didactic art. This print demonstrates the artist's engagement with classical literature and his technical proficiency in the medium of engraving. It offers a clear view into the intellectual preoccupations of the Venetian Renaissance, where moral philosophy and visual art intersected to provide commentary on human behaviour and the nature of justice.
