An etching by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo depicting the second station of the cross, where Jesus receives the cross. The print features detailed linework and expressive figures within an architectural setting.
This etching, titled 'The Carrying of the Cross, Station II', is by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, an Italian artist born in Venice in 1727. He was the son of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and worked extensively in his studio, later developing his own independent style. Domenico is known for his contributions to the family's decorative schemes in palaces and villas, as well as for his series of etchings depicting religious subjects. He died in Venice in 1804. The print depicts a scene from the Stations of the Cross, specifically the second station, where Jesus receives the cross. The composition is set within an arched architectural space, possibly a gateway or courtyard. In the foreground, Christ is shown bearing the cross, surrounded by figures, some mocking and others assisting. A bust of Tiberius is visible on a plinth to the left. The etching is characterised by fine, detailed linework, creating a sense of depth and texture. The figures are rendered with expressive faces and dynamic poses, conveying the emotional intensity of the scene. The print is part of a series illustrating the Passion of Christ, reflecting the artist's engagement with religious themes.
