A detailed wood engraving by Alfred Rethel depicting a scene from Hannibal's historic crossing of the Alps.
This wood engraving is the first plate from Alfred Rethel's celebrated portfolio, 'Hannibal's March over the Alps'. Produced in the early 1840s, the series depicts the arduous journey of the Carthaginian general through the mountain passes. Rethel, a prominent figure in the German Romantic tradition, employs a stark, linear style that draws inspiration from the woodcut traditions of the sixteenth century, particularly the work of Albrecht Dürer.
The composition focuses on a small group of figures navigating a treacherous, rocky terrain. An elderly guide gestures towards the path ahead, while Hannibal, positioned centrally, observes the surroundings with a sense of gravity. The inclusion of a fallen ram's head and a dog in the foreground adds a layer of symbolic weight to the scene, suggesting the physical toll and the immense scale of the undertaking. The jagged, mountainous backdrop is rendered with precise, controlled lines that convey the harshness of the environment.
Rethel's approach to this historical subject avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring a clear, narrative clarity. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, guiding the viewer's eye across the rugged landscape. This print captures the tension of the moment, reflecting the artist's interest in themes of struggle, leadership, and the human condition against the backdrop of historical epic. The work remains a fine example of nineteenth-century graphic art, demonstrating the technical skill required to translate complex painterly concepts into the medium of wood engraving.
