A serene view of the historic Château Gaillard by French Post-Impressionist painter Maxime Maufra, capturing the ruins reflected in the River Seine.
Maxime Maufra, a painter associated with the Pont-Aven School, captures the ruins of Château Gaillard in this work. The fortress, originally constructed by Richard the Lionheart, sits atop a limestone cliff overlooking the River Seine. Maufra employs a technique characterised by broken brushstrokes and a focus on the interplay of light across the water and the foliage.
The composition balances the architectural weight of the medieval ruins against the organic forms of the trees in the foreground. The river acts as a mirror, reflecting the sky and the surrounding greenery, which creates a sense of continuity between the natural environment and the historical structure. Maufra was known for his travels throughout France, often seeking out locations that offered a synthesis of history and natural beauty. His approach here avoids rigid detail, opting instead to convey the atmosphere of the site through colour and texture.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the French countryside, a subject he returned to throughout his career. The palette consists of soft greens, earthy ochres, and cool blues, which unify the scene. By focusing on the reflection in the water, Maufra draws the viewer into the quietude of the riverbank. The work remains a representative example of his later style, where he moved away from the more experimental techniques of his early career toward a more traditional, yet still light-filled, observation of nature.
