David Roberts, a Scottish painter (1796-1864), was celebrated for his detailed architectural and topographical scenes, particularly of the Near East and Europe. He trained as a house painter and stage designer before dedicating himself to fine art. Roberts travelled extensively, documenting historical sites and exotic locales with accuracy and romanticism. His work is characterised by its precise draughtsmanship and atmospheric light effects. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1841.
