A dramatic High Renaissance composition by Lorenzo Lotto, depicting Saint Anthony distributing charity to the needy under the watchful gaze of angels.
Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the sixteenth century, produced this work for the Confraternity of Sant'Antonio in Venice. The composition is structured around the central figure of Saint Anthony, who is elevated and flanked by angels. The scene is framed by heavy red curtains, a device that creates a theatrical sense of depth and focus. Below the saint, two clerics distribute alms to a crowd of supplicants, illustrating the act of charity that defines the subject matter.
Lotto employs a palette dominated by deep reds and muted earth tones, which contrast with the luminous white robes of the saint and the clerics. The lighting is deliberate, drawing the eye from the lower foreground, where the needy reach upward, toward the divine presence of the saint above. The figures exhibit the psychological intensity and expressive gestures characteristic of Lotto's mature style. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured balanced, static compositions, Lotto introduces a sense of movement and human interaction that bridges the gap between the celestial and the terrestrial realms.
The architectural elements, including the stone ledge and the patterned cloth, provide a tactile quality to the foreground. The inclusion of specific details, such as the bishop's mitre and the books, adds to the narrative clarity of the scene. This work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to combine traditional religious iconography with a personal, emotive approach to figure painting. The painting is currently housed in the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, where it continues to be studied for its complex spatial arrangement and its contribution to the Venetian school of the period.
