A dramatic Baroque depiction of St. Lawrence distributing church treasures to the poor, rendered with intense chiaroscuro and fluid brushwork.
Bernardo Strozzi, a Genoese painter and Capuchin friar, produced this work during his active period in Genoa. The painting depicts the deacon St. Lawrence distributing the treasures of the church to the poor, a narrative drawn from hagiographic tradition. Strozzi employs a dramatic chiaroscuro technique, where a singular light source illuminates the figures against a dark, indeterminate background. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the saint and the recipients of his charity.
St. Lawrence is shown in his ecclesiastical vestments, holding a processional cross. His expression is one of calm resolve as he hands over liturgical objects. The figures of the poor are rendered with a focus on their weathered features and humble attire, contrasting with the metallic sheen of the church vessels. Strozzi uses a palette dominated by deep shadows, punctuated by the saturated red of the saint's dalmatic. The brushwork is fluid, characteristic of his mature style, which shows the influence of Caravaggio and the Venetian school.
The composition is tightly focused on the exchange of goods. By removing extraneous architectural detail, Strozzi concentrates the emotional weight of the scene on the act of giving itself. The metalwork, including the censer and chalice, is painted with precision, reflecting the artist's ability to capture different textures. This work is representative of the Counter-Reformation art produced in Italy, which sought to communicate religious narratives with clarity and emotional immediacy. The painting remains a fine example of Strozzi's ability to balance naturalistic observation with the theatrical lighting typical of the Baroque period.
