A classic Ukiyo-e triptych by Chōkōsai Eishō, depicting three elegant courtesans in the Chōjiya pleasure house, framed by a large phoenix motif.
This triptych by Chōkōsai Eishō depicts three courtesans within the Chōjiya pleasure house. The composition is typical of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the representation of beautiful women. Eishō, a student of Hosoda Eishi, adopted the elongated proportions and refined features characteristic of the late eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e school.
The central figure sits in a composed posture, while the flanking figures engage in quiet activities. The background features a large, stylised phoenix, a motif often associated with auspiciousness and imperial grace, which provides a decorative contrast to the figures. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted reds, and black ink lines to define the forms. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the woodblock carvers and printers of the period, who managed to balance the large-scale background pattern with the delicate details of the women's kimonos and hairstyles.
Eishō was active during the 1790s and produced numerous works documenting the inhabitants of the Yoshiwara district. This specific print captures the atmosphere of the pleasure quarters, where the daily lives of courtesans were aestheticised for the urban public. The use of a triptych format allows for a wider narrative space, enabling the artist to place the figures in a setting that feels both intimate and theatrical. The lines are precise, maintaining a balance between the graphic nature of the woodblock medium and the fluid movement of the fabric folds. This work offers a view into the visual culture of Edo-period Japan, where fashion, status, and artistic representation converged.
