During his formative years, Steele spent time in Munich, where he studied the Old Masters to refine his understanding of light, shadow, and anatomical form.

The composition depicts the Christ Child and the infant Saint John the Baptist in a wooded setting, interacting with a lamb. The figures are rendered with the soft, rounded forms characteristic of Rubens, reflecting the Baroque master's interest in physical vitality and emotional warmth. Steele employs a warm, earthy palette to define the figures against the darker, atmospheric background.
