An etching by Guido Reni depicting the infant Jesus and the young Saint John the Baptist in a serene, wooded setting.
This etching by Guido Reni depicts a traditional devotional subject: the meeting of the infant Jesus and the young Saint John the Baptist. Reni, a central figure of the Bolognese School, was known for his ability to balance classical restraint with the emotional intensity characteristic of the Baroque period. In this composition, the two children are positioned in a wooded setting, with the Christ child standing and reaching towards the kneeling John. The latter holds his traditional attribute, a reed cross, while a lamb rests nearby, symbolising the future sacrifice of Christ. In the background, the figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph are visible, providing a sense of narrative context to the encounter.
Reni's approach to printmaking is evident here through his use of fine, rhythmic lines to define form and shadow. The hatching techniques create a sense of volume in the figures and texture in the surrounding foliage. Unlike the dramatic chiaroscuro found in his oil paintings, this etching relies on the clarity of line and the interplay of light and shadow across the paper surface. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to draw the eye towards the interaction between the two children. The inclusion of the parents in the distance adds depth to the scene without distracting from the primary subjects. This work reflects the artist's interest in idealised beauty and his technical proficiency in the medium of etching, which allowed him to disseminate his compositions to a wider audience beyond his immediate patrons. The print captures a moment of quiet intimacy, typical of Reni's religious works, which often sought to evoke a sense of grace and serenity through carefully considered poses and expressions.
