A snow-covered cityscape by German Expressionist painter August Macke, 'The Church of St. Mary in Bonn in Snow' captures a quiet, wintry atmosphere with its geometric forms and restrained colour palette.
August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Macke's work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in depicting modern life. He was killed in action during World War I at the age of 27. 'The Church of St. Mary in Bonn in Snow' presents a view over a snow-covered cityscape. The composition is structured by the geometric forms of the buildings, their roofs weighted down with snow. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by browns, greys, and whites, with touches of yellow and green in the buildings. The sky is a pale blue, and the bare branches of trees add a stark contrast to the scene. The painting captures a quiet, wintry atmosphere, with a focus on the interplay of light and shadow on the snow-covered surfaces.
