A 1821 woodblock print by Hasegawa Myōtei from the educational text 'Semi no Ogawa', depicting women engaged in study and textile work.
This woodblock print originates from the educational text 'Semi no Ogawa', authored and illustrated by the female artist Hasegawa Myōtei. Published in 1821, the work functions as a primer for women, providing instruction on literacy, calligraphy, and domestic conduct. The composition is divided into two distinct panels, each depicting women engaged in scholarly and artisanal pursuits within a traditional Japanese interior.
The left panel shows women seated on tatami mats, focused on reading and writing tasks at low desks. The right panel displays women working with textiles, demonstrating the integration of academic study and practical craft expected of women in the Edo period. The lines are precise and functional, characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques used for mass-produced educational materials of the era. The text surrounding the illustrations provides moral guidance and linguistic exercises, written in a fluid cursive script.
Hasegawa Myōtei, also known as Hasegawa Mitsu, was a notable figure in the cultural life of Kyoto. Her work reflects the broader societal expectations of the time, where education for women was increasingly valued within specific social strata. The print offers a glimpse into the domestic environment of the early nineteenth century, documenting the tools, clothing, and spatial arrangements of the period. The balanced composition and clear delineation of figures allow the viewer to observe the quiet, disciplined atmosphere of the scene. This print is a valuable example of the intersection between literature and visual art in Japanese history, capturing the daily life and educational standards of the era through a refined, monochromatic aesthetic.
