A classic etching from Goya's 'La Tauromaquia' series, depicting the legendary El Cid Campeador in a dramatic bullfighting encounter.
This work belongs to the series 'La Tauromaquia', a collection of thirty-three prints produced by Francisco Goya during the mid-1810s. The series explores the history and practice of bullfighting in Spain, moving from historical accounts to contemporary scenes of the arena. This specific plate, numbered eleven, depicts the legendary figure El Cid Campeador engaged in a mounted combat with a bull.
Goya employs a combination of etching and aquatint to create the atmospheric quality of the scene. The central action is rendered with economy, focusing on the tension between the horseman and the animal. The horse, braced against the charge, and the bull, lowered in aggression, form a compact unit of energy. The surrounding frame, featuring decorative putti and scrolling foliage, provides a stark contrast to the stark, monochromatic depiction of the fight itself. This ornamental border was added in later editions of the series, distinguishing these prints from the initial proofs.
The artist demonstrates a mastery of light and shadow, using the aquatint process to suggest the dusty, sun-drenched environment of the bullring. By choosing to depict a historical hero, Goya connects the spectacle of the bullfight to the broader narrative of Spanish identity and tradition. The composition remains focused on the physical mechanics of the encounter, avoiding unnecessary embellishment. This print offers a view into Goya's technical approach to printmaking, where the interplay of line and tone defines the drama of the subject matter. It remains a significant example of his work in the medium, reflecting his interest in the visceral nature of public spectacles.
