A detailed 1571 engraving by Flemish artist Abraham de Bruyn, depicting the Circumcision of Christ with characteristic Northern Mannerist style.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn, dated 1571, depicts the Circumcision of Christ within a formal architectural setting. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher active in Antwerp, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition is structured around a central altar, where the infant Christ is held by a bearded figure, while another individual performs the ritual. The scene is populated by various onlookers, their figures rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive, twisting poses typical of Northern Mannerism.
The artist employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and suggest the play of light. Torches positioned on either side of the altar provide a dramatic light source, casting deep shadows and illuminating the folds of the heavy drapery worn by the figures. In the foreground, a kneeling woman rests her hand upon a basket containing doves, a detail that adds a layer of symbolic narrative to the work. The architectural background, featuring arched vaults and a distant gallery, provides a sense of depth and scale.
De Bruyn was known for his ability to translate complex theological subjects into accessible printed formats. This work reflects the influence of contemporary Italian art, which filtered into the Low Countries through prints and drawings. The attention to detail, from the textures of the garments to the ornate base of the altar, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship expected of Antwerp printmakers during the late sixteenth century. The print serves as a record of the stylistic preferences of the era, where classical architectural elements were combined with emotive, human-centred religious storytelling. The clarity of the line work allows for a close examination of the individual expressions and the physical interactions between the figures, capturing a moment of solemnity and ritual significance.
