A study of the rugged Breton coastline by French Post-Impressionist Maxime Maufra, capturing the dramatic cliffs and emerald waters of Polhor.
Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, maintained a lifelong fascination with the rugged coastlines of Brittany. In this work, he captures the dramatic geological formations of Polhor with a focus on the interplay between solid rock and the shifting sea. Maufra employs a technique that balances observation with a personal, expressive application of paint. The cliff face is rendered with varied, textured brushwork, allowing the ochre, grey, and violet tones to suggest the mineral composition of the stone.
The composition is anchored by the massive cliff, which dominates the left side of the frame and descends into the water. The sea, painted in shades of emerald and deep green, provides a contrast to the warm, earthy palette of the land. Maufra avoids the rigid precision of academic painting, opting instead for a rhythmic approach that conveys the movement of the waves and the weathered surface of the rock. His work often reflects the influence of his contemporaries, including Paul Gauguin and Paul Sérusier, yet he retains a distinct interest in the atmospheric conditions of the Atlantic coast.
This print captures the specific light of the region, where the sky meets the horizon in a soft, diffused manner. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the raw, elemental nature of the site. Maufra’s ability to synthesise the physical weight of the cliffs with the fluid nature of the water is characteristic of his mature period. The result is a study of form and colour that remains grounded in the reality of the Breton coast while demonstrating the artist's interest in the expressive potential of the medium.
