Jusepe de Ribera's 'The Clubfooted Boy' is a Spanish Baroque portrait of a disabled child, rendered with realism and dignity. The painting is characterised by its earthy tones and the boy's direct, engaging gaze.
Painted in 1642 by Jusepe de Ribera, 'The Clubfooted Boy' (also known as 'The Clubfoot') is a striking example of Spanish Baroque portraiture. Ribera, a leading painter of his time, spent most of his career in Naples, then under Spanish rule. This work is part of a series depicting individuals from the lower strata of society, treated with remarkable dignity and realism. Ribera's approach departs from idealised portrayals, instead presenting his subjects with an unvarnished honesty. The painting features a young boy with a visible disability, standing against a simple, earthy background. He carries a wooden crutch over his shoulder and holds a piece of paper in his hand. The boy's gaze is direct and engaging, and his slight smile conveys a sense of resilience. Ribera's use of light and shadow adds depth to the figure, accentuating the textures of his clothing and the details of his face. The limited colour palette, dominated by browns and ochres, enhances the painting's realistic and somber mood. The work is now held in the Louvre Museum, Paris.
