A dramatic etching by Alphonse Legros depicting a family fleeing a fire, rendered with expressive line work and high contrast.
Alphonse Legros, a French artist who spent much of his career in Britain, produced this etching during a period when he was deeply engaged with the expressive potential of the print medium. The Conflagration depicts a domestic scene interrupted by disaster. A man carries a child away from the danger, while a woman comforts a second figure on the ground. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, smoke-filled background and the figures illuminated by the fire.
Legros utilised the etching needle to create a variety of textures, from the dense, chaotic lines representing the smoke and debris to the softer, more controlled strokes defining the figures. His approach to the subject avoids melodrama, focusing instead on the physical reality of the event. The figures are rendered with a sense of urgency, their postures conveying the weight of their situation.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the human condition, a theme that occupied much of his output. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Legros directs the viewer to the emotional core of the scene. The etching demonstrates his technical mastery, particularly in his ability to manipulate light and shadow through line work alone. The print is a characteristic example of his later work, which often explored themes of hardship and rural life. It remains a study in the economy of means, where the artist achieves a high degree of narrative tension through the deliberate application of ink and pressure.
