A detailed historical painting by Hendrick de Meijer depicting the Dutch military encampment during the 1645 capture of Hulst.
This painting by Hendrick de Meijer depicts the military capture of the town of Hulst from Spanish forces during the Eighty Years' War. The scene captures the aftermath of the siege, focusing on the Dutch encampment situated along the waterway. The composition is dominated by a wide, atmospheric sky typical of seventeenth-century Dutch maritime and military art.
In the foreground, soldiers and officers are shown in various states of activity. Some figures are mounted on horseback, while others attend to supplies, barrels, and administrative tasks near the tents. The presence of the Dutch tricolour flag flying from a mast identifies the victors. In the middle distance, small vessels navigate the water, and the fortified town of Hulst is visible on the horizon, its silhouette marked by church spires and defensive walls.
De Meijer employs a muted palette of earth tones, ochres, and soft greys to render the damp, overcast conditions of the Dutch coastal region. The light is diffused, suggesting a late autumn day. The artist balances the chaotic nature of a military camp with the orderly, expansive view of the surrounding terrain. This work functions as a historical record of the event, documenting the logistical reality of seventeenth-century warfare rather than focusing solely on combat. The attention to detail in the clothing, the horse tack, and the military equipment provides insight into the period. The painting is part of the collection at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it serves as a visual account of the strategic successes of the Dutch Republic during the mid-seventeenth century.
