A medieval celestial illustration of the constellation Leo, featuring gold star markers from the Kitab suwar al-kawakib al-thabita.
This illustration of the constellation Leo originates from the Kitab suwar al-kawakib al-thabita, or Book of the Images of the Fixed Stars. Written by the astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi in the 10th century, this text became a primary reference for celestial mapping across the Islamic world. The work synthesised Ptolemaic astronomy with traditional Arabic star lore, providing precise visual guides for identifying constellations in the night sky.
The figure of the lion is rendered with a focus on functional clarity rather than naturalistic representation. The artist incorporates gold-coloured dots across the body of the animal to mark the specific positions of stars within the constellation. These points correspond to the mathematical data presented in the accompanying grid, which outlines the coordinates and magnitudes of the stars. The lion is depicted in a profile stance, with its tail curved upwards and its features stylised to fit the conventions of medieval manuscript illumination.
The parchment background retains the texture of its age, showing the subtle discolouration typical of early codices. The red ink used for the border and the Arabic script at the top provides a visual contrast to the muted tones of the lion. This folio represents the intersection of artistic practice and empirical observation, where the study of the heavens was documented through careful draughtsmanship. Such manuscripts were essential tools for navigators and scholars, bridging the gap between theoretical astronomy and practical observation. The composition remains flat, prioritising the legibility of the star positions over spatial depth, which is characteristic of the scientific illustration style of the period.
