This engraving by François Ragot depicts the dramatic biblical narrative of the conversion of Saint Paul on the road to Damascus. The composition captures the moment of divine intervention, with Saul of Tarsus fallen from his horse, blinded by a heavenly light. Above, the figure of Christ appears amidst clouds, directing the event. The scene is populated by soldiers and rearing horses, creating a sense of chaotic motion typical of the Baroque period. Ragot employs a variety of line weights and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures, the texture of the horses, and the atmospheric quality of the sky. The print demonstrates the technical skill required for seventeenth-century reproductive engraving, where the artist translated the painterly qualities of a larger composition into a monochromatic medium. The arrangement of figures follows a diagonal axis, guiding the viewer from the fallen Saul in the foreground to the celestial vision above. The horses, rendered with expressive energy, add to the tension of the scene.
