A detailed mezzotint by Cornelis Dusart depicting a jovial travelling peddler in a rustic Dutch setting.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, produced this mezzotint during the final years of the seventeenth century. The work depicts a travelling peddler or charlatan, a common figure in Dutch genre scenes of the period. The central character is captured in a dynamic, almost theatrical pose, holding a staff adorned with tassels. His expression is one of exaggerated joviality, typical of the caricatured style Dusart employed to depict lower-class life. In the background, two smaller figures engage with a hoop, while an older individual watches from the doorway of a rustic building.
The mezzotint technique allows for a soft transition between light and shadow, creating a velvety texture that defines the forms of the figures and the rough masonry of the cottage. Dusart was known for his interest in the lives of peasants and itinerant performers, often imbuing his subjects with a sense of humour or irony. The composition balances the central, active figure against the static, observational presence of the person in the doorway. This print provides a window into the social observations of the Dutch Golden Age, focusing on the vernacular activities of the time rather than the formal portraiture or religious subjects favoured by his contemporaries. The attention to detail in the clothing and the accessories, such as the tassels on the staff, demonstrates the technical precision Dusart brought to his printmaking practice.
