A delicate lithograph by Pierre Bonnard, capturing a Parisian street scene with characteristic flattened perspective and soft, muted tones.
Pierre Bonnard, a central figure of the Nabis group, produced this lithograph during a period when he was deeply engaged with the rhythms of Parisian street life. The work captures a costermonger at his barrow, a common sight in the city at the turn of the century. Bonnard employs a flattened perspective and a restricted palette, techniques that reflect his interest in Japanese woodblock prints, or ukiyo-e, which were highly influential among his contemporaries in late nineteenth-century France.
The composition is defined by its economy of line and soft, muted colouration. A figure stands prominently in the foreground, draped in a textured shawl, while the costermonger leans over his cart of produce. To the right, a small dog moves across the frame, adding a sense of spontaneous movement to the scene. The background is suggested through simplified forms, including striped awnings and indistinct figures, which prevent the image from becoming overly cluttered.
Bonnard avoids traditional modelling, opting instead for areas of flat colour and delicate outlines. This approach creates a sense of intimacy and quiet observation. The print demonstrates his ability to transform mundane urban activities into decorative arrangements. By focusing on the interplay of shapes and the subtle relationships between the figures, Bonnard invites the viewer to appreciate the graphic qualities of the everyday. This piece is a characteristic example of his printmaking practice, where the medium of lithography allows for a soft, painterly quality that complements his interest in domestic and public observation.
