A woodcut attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger, titled 'The Countess', depicts a noblewoman being adorned with jewellery while Death looms behind her, a memento mori symbolising the fleeting nature of time.
This woodcut, attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger, presents a scene of mortality and vanity. The composition features a noblewoman, identified by the title 'Die Greffinn' (The Countess) at the top, being adorned with jewellery by a maidservant. However, looming behind her is the figure of Death, a skeleton who is also placing a necklace around her neck. An hourglass rests on a table in the foreground, a memento mori symbolising the fleeting nature of time. The scene is rendered with fine lines, typical of Holbein's meticulous style. The interior setting, with its wood-panelled walls and latticed window, adds to the sense of enclosure and impending doom. Holbein is best known for his portraits of the Tudor court, but he also produced a series of woodcuts known as 'The Dance of Death', of which this work is a part. These prints explore the theme of death coming to all, regardless of status or wealth.
