A refined woodblock print by Jukōdō Yoshikuni depicting a courtesan dressed as the historical figure Shizuka Gozen during an Osaka costume parade.
This woodblock print by Jukōdō Yoshikuni depicts the courtesan Emi, a figure from the Kyōki brothel, dressed in the costume of the legendary historical figure Shizuka Gozen. The work originates from the series Naniwa Shimanouchi nerimono, which documented the costume parades held in the Shimanouchi district of Osaka. These processions allowed courtesans and other performers to adopt the personas of famous historical or literary characters, blending the reality of the pleasure quarters with the theatricality of the stage.
Yoshikuni, a prominent artist of the Kamigata school, captures the subject in a formal, kneeling pose. The figure wears an elaborate outer robe adorned with a repeating pattern of stylised waves and floral motifs, layered over a striking, solid orange hakama. A sword is tucked into the sash, signalling the martial identity of Shizuka Gozen, while the fan held in the right hand adds a layer of grace to the composition. The artist employs a clean, precise line quality, characteristic of the Osaka print tradition, which often favoured a more refined and subtle aesthetic compared to the bolder styles of Edo.
The print includes cartouches containing the title and series information, alongside the artist's seal. The colour palette is balanced, relying on the contrast between the muted cream background, the deep orange of the lower garment, and the cool blue tones of the decorative elements. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural life of early nineteenth-century Osaka, where the boundaries between the world of the courtesan and the world of historical drama were frequently blurred for public entertainment.
