A refined woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicting the courtesan Karauta and her attendants, showcasing the elegant fashion of the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts the courtesan Karauta of the Ōgiya, accompanied by two young attendants, or kamuro. The work belongs to the series Hinagata wakana no hatsu moyō, which translates to A Pattern Book of the Year’s First Designs, Fresh as Spring Herbs. Koryūsai was a prolific designer of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, and this print demonstrates his focus on the fashion and posture of the Edo period pleasure quarters.
The composition centres on Karauta, who stands in a graceful, slightly turned pose. Her elaborate kimono features motifs of pine trees and other seasonal elements, reflecting the series title. The two attendants flank her, creating a balanced arrangement that draws the eye toward the central figure. Koryūsai employs a refined line quality, typical of the mid-Edo period, to define the folds of the garments and the delicate features of the women. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted oranges, which allows the viewer to focus on the graphic quality of the textile patterns and the figures' silhouettes.
Koryūsai was a samurai who transitioned to printmaking, and his work often displays a high degree of technical precision. This print is an example of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, technique, which allowed for multiple colours to be applied to a single sheet. The paper retains a warm, aged tone, characteristic of authentic woodblock prints from this era. The figures are depicted with the elongated proportions common in the artist's work, emphasising the elegance of the courtesan's attire and the social status of the subjects within the Yoshiwara district. This print provides a window into the aesthetic values of 18th-century Japan, where fashion, art, and the floating world intersected.
