A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai, depicting a high-ranking courtesan and her two attendants in traditional Edo-period fashion.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts the courtesan Kichijuro of the Kage Manjiya house, accompanied by two young attendants known as kamuro. Koryūsai was a samurai who transitioned into the world of professional printmaking, and his work often captures the refined atmosphere of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. This piece belongs to the series 'Models for Fashions: New Designs as Fresh as Young Leaves', a collection that functioned as a visual catalogue of contemporary trends in kimono design and hair styling.
The composition focuses on the elegant posture of the central figure. Kichijuro wears a kimono decorated with pine motifs, a symbol of longevity and resilience. The two kamuro flanking her provide a sense of scale and social status, as high-ranking courtesans were typically seen in public with such attendants. Koryūsai employs a delicate line quality to define the folds of the fabric and the individual strands of the elaborate hairstyles. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of ochre, black, and soft grey, which allows the viewer to focus on the graphic patterns of the textiles.
Technically, the print demonstrates the mastery of the multi-block printing process common in the late eighteenth century. The figures are arranged in a manner that suggests movement, yet the overall effect remains balanced and composed. The inclusion of the series title and the artist's signature provides historical context, identifying this as a work intended for a sophisticated audience interested in the latest fashions of Edo. By documenting the attire and mannerisms of the courtesan class, Koryūsai preserves a specific moment in Japanese social history. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic values that defined the urban culture of the period, prioritising grace and stylistic precision over dramatic action.
