An early eighteenth-century sumizuri-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting the courtesan Takao in a moment of quiet reflection.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts the celebrated courtesan Takao. Produced in 1702, the work belongs to the early period of Ukiyo-e, a genre focused on the fleeting pleasures of the Edo period. The print is a sumizuri-e, meaning it is printed entirely in black ink on paper without the addition of colour. This technique relies on the strength of the line and the balance of negative space to convey form and character.
Takao is shown leaning against a window frame, a pose that suggests a moment of quiet contemplation. Her kimono features a distinct maple leaf motif, which serves as a visual identifier for her persona. The composition is balanced by the inclusion of calligraphic text on the left side, which provides context regarding the date and the publisher. The artist, Okumura Masanobu, was a significant figure in the development of printmaking techniques, often experimenting with new formats and compositions during his career.
The lines are clean and deliberate, characteristic of the early eighteenth-century style. The figure occupies the right side of the frame, while the text occupies the left, creating a harmonious arrangement typical of Japanese graphic arts from this era. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece. This print offers a clear view into the aesthetic preferences of the Genroku era, where the depiction of famous beauties was a primary subject for artists and a popular commodity for the urban public. By focusing on the elegance of the figure and the precision of the brushwork, Masanobu captures a specific cultural archetype of the time.
